In a remarkable demonstration of community care and health innovation, the M-PESA Foundation, in collaboration with Zuri Health and Lion SightFirst Eye Hospital, recently hosted a transformative medical camp at Kamureito Primary School in Bomet. This initiative, which benefited approximately 3,000 residents, underscores the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to enhancing healthcare access and improving health outcomes across Kenya.

A Comprehensive Healthcare Approach

The medical camp provided a wide range of vital services designed to address both general and specialized health needs. Attendees received eye care consultations, breast and cervical cancer screenings, fistula screenings, general doctor consultations, diabetes and hypertension monitoring, and consultations focusing on elderly and child health. This extensive array of services reflects a holistic approach to healthcare, ensuring that critical health issues are addressed effectively.

Supporting Maternal and Child Health

In addition to the medical camp, the M-PESA Foundation also distributed 100 mama packs at Longisa County Referral Hospital. These packs are crucial for supporting mothers and their newborns by providing essential items for their well-being. This effort aligns with the Foundation’s mission to enhance maternal and child health, demonstrating a clear focus on the most vulnerable populations.

Vision for Health Transformation

Karen Basiye, Executive Director of M-PESA Foundation, articulated the Foundation’s vision: “Health is one of our key pillars at M-PESA Foundation. Through our series of medical camps, we continue to realize our purpose of transforming lives and taking healthcare services closer to the people, with a focus on non-communicable diseases, reproductive health advice, and general health consultations.” This commitment to improving healthcare access and quality is a driving force behind their extensive outreach efforts.

Expanding Reach and Impact

Since May 2023, the M-PESA Foundation has conducted 12 successful medical camps, with the latest phase beginning in April 2024. This new phase targets 12 counties, including Bungoma, Siaya, Machakos, and Kajiado, as well as the Nairobi Metropolitan area, covering Mathare, Githurai, and Kabete. To date, over 24,000 people have benefited from these camps, highlighting the Foundation’s expanding impact.

Embracing Technology for Better Health

A key feature of the medical camps is the integration of technology to enhance healthcare delivery. Utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI), the camps monitor vital signs such as pulse rate, blood pressure, and body temperature. This technological approach not only provides accurate health assessments but also guides further medical advice. Additionally, Zuri Health offers patients free follow-up consultations via SMS and WhatsApp for up to six months, ensuring continued care and support.

Looking Ahead

The M-PESA Foundation’s medical camps represent a significant leap forward in making quality healthcare more accessible to underserved communities. By combining comprehensive health services with innovative technology and a strong focus on maternal and child health, the Foundation is setting a benchmark for how organizations can effectively address public health needs.

As the Foundation continues its mission, it remains committed to reaching more communities, improving health outcomes, and transforming lives across Kenya. The success of the Bomet medical camp is a testament to the power of collaboration and the profound impact of bringing essential health services directly to those in need.
