A team of students from The African Leadership University, Machakos University, Technical University of Mombasa, and United States International University Africa emerged as one of the top three finalists at the 2025 Microsoft Imagine Cup, an international student technology competition. The winners were announced at Microsoft Build this week.
Background:
Now in its 23rd year, Imagine Cup challenges students to apply AI to innovative solutions. This year had over 15,000 students from 150 countries competing and 18 semifinalist teams narrowed down to three finalists.
The innovation:
Anthony Marugu of Kenya, Branice Kazira, Gheida Abdala Al Mashjery, and Daniel Phillip created Signvrse, an AI tool called Terp that translates oral speech into sign language using realistic 3D avatars. It has a 2,300-word vocabulary and bridges communication gaps for the Deaf in schools, hospitals, and offices, filling the gap of a lack of interpreters globally.
Stats:
Over 2 million students from 160 countries have participated in Imagine Cup since its launch. 2025 had over 15,000 students from 150 countries, with 18 semi finalist teams.
The reward for the Winners:
Argus, from the USA, got $100,000; runners-up, who included Signvrse, got $25,000 each.
Signvrse is close to team member Daniel Phillip, a Deaf individual who wishes to dispel stereotypes on the platform. Kenya’s track record shines: Team TAWI won in 2023 for assisting children with Auditory Processing Disorder, and Team REWEBA received the 2021 award for a life-saving postnatal screening device.
Statement:
“It is a testament to the incredible innovation our African youth are creating,” said Phyllis Migwi, Microsoft Kenya Country Manager. “Inclusive technology building is a crucial step towards building opportunities for a productive life.”
Argus, an American company, won for their wearable technology that employs artificial intelligence to help visually impaired people travel independently. They also got a mentorship by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.
What’s Next:
Signvrse will keep expanding its AI-driven platform, bridging digital worlds with everyone and arming millions with hassle-free access to communication.
