Mawingu Expands to Bondo: Bridging the Digital Divide in Siaya County
In an exciting development for digital connectivity in Kenya, Mawingu Networks has announced the expansion of its services to Bondo, Siaya County. This expansion marks a significant milestone for the Internet Service Provider (ISP), increasing the number of counties connected by its network to 29 across the country.
In the latest progress update for the second half of 2024, Mawingu’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Farouk Ramji, highlighted the importance of this expansion: “Our expansion into Bondo marks another milestone towards our long-term vision of making meaningful connectivity accessible to more Kenyans. The digital economy in the country is rapidly expanding, and we want to support more Kenyans to tap into the knowledge and connections that it provides.”
Mawingu’s commitment to providing affordable and reliable Internet service to underserved areas is evident in its growth strategy. With a customer base of over 19,000 active users, Mawingu is dedicated to connecting towns and urban centers that have been neglected by other providers due to high capital costs and logistical challenges.
Mr. Ramji elaborated on this mission: “We will continue providing connectivity access to these areas, which have traditionally not been given priority due to the high capital cost and logistical complexities involved in ensuring a stable, reliable, and affordable service. This is in line with our long-term vision of offering meaningful Internet connectivity at very competitive price points comparative to other service providers, by building sustainable, flexible infrastructure in underserved regions.”
In addition to the Bondo expansion, Mawingu plans to enhance its network infrastructure further by laying out 50 kilometers of fiber in existing markets. This initiative is aimed at boosting Internet quality and extending access, aligning with Mawingu’s broader strategy of improving connectivity across Kenya.
Mr. Ramji emphasized the company’s commitment beyond merely providing Internet access: “Mawingu’s aim is not to simply drop an Internet cable at someone’s doorstep. We seek to help our customers access new opportunities for work, education, entertainment, and social connections through the power of the Internet. Our company’s mission is driven by this very purpose: Open Opportunities.”
In conclusion, Mr. Ramji assured that Mawingu will continue to focus on its growth strategy to expand connectivity to additional counties within Kenya this year: “Mawingu remains committed to going the extra mile to truly meet our customers at their connectivity point of need. To this end, we are firmly focused on expediting our mid-term growth strategy of expanding our connectivity to additional counties across Kenya this year.”
Mawingu’s expansion to Bondo is not just a step forward for the ISP but also a significant leap towards bridging the digital divide and fostering digital inclusion in Kenya.
