I have been using TECNO CAMON 20 Pro for a few weeks now courtesy of my great people at TECNO Kenya. Right from the word go I have to say that I have enjoyed using the phone in all aspects.
The TECNO CAMON 20 Pro is a mid-range smartphone that offers a lot of features for its price. It has a beautiful design, a large and smooth AMOLED display, a powerful processor, and a decent battery life. It also has a camera-focused approach, with a 64MP main sensor and a 32MP selfie shooter. The phone supports 5G connectivity, which is a rare feature in this segment.
Design and Display
The phone’s design is one of its highlights, as it has a unique crystal-like back cover that reflects light in different ways. The phone also comes in a special edition that features the artwork of Mr Doodle, a UK-based artist who is known for his graffiti style. The phone has dual speakers, a headphone jack, and a USB-C port. The phone feels premium and well-built, despite being made of plastic.
The display is another strong point of the phone, as it has a 6.67-inch AMOLED panel with a resolution of 1080 x 2460 pixels and a refresh rate of 120Hz. The display is sharp, vibrant, and responsive, and it supports always-on feature that shows useful information when the screen is off. The display also has an in-display fingerprint scanner that works well.
Performance
The performance of the phone is impressive, as it is powered by the MediaTek Helio G99 chipset, which is an octa-core processor with two Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2.05GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 2GHz. The phone also has 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage, which can be expanded via a microSD card. The phone runs on Android 13 with HiOS 13 on top, which is a custom skin that offers some extra features and customization options.
Camera
The camera is the main selling point of the phone, as it has a quad-camera setup on the back and a single camera on the front. The main camera is a 64MP sensor with sensor-shift OIS and support for ultra-steady video. The other cameras are a 2MP macro lens, a QVGA lens, and an LED flash. The front camera is a 32MP sensor that can record 2K videos. The camera quality is good in daylight conditions, but it struggles in low-light scenarios. The camera app has various modes and features, such as AI scene detection, portrait mode, night mode, AR shot, and more.
Battery
The battery life of the phone is decent, as it has a 5000mAh battery that supports 33W fast charging. The phone can last for a day on moderate usage, but heavy users may need to charge it more often. The fast charging speed is not very fast compared to some of its competitors, such as the Redmi Note 12 Pro or the Infinix Note 30 Pro.
5G Connectivity
The phone supports 5G connectivity, which is a future-proof feature that may come in handy when the network becomes more widely available in the country. At the moment both Safaricom and Airtel are putting 5G sites in different parts of the country. Safaricom indicated in its latest annual report that it targets to increase its 5G sites from the current 205 to 800 by the close of March 2024. Meanwhile Airtel Kenya announced during the launch of its 5G that it has 370 active 5G sites, positioned in 16 counties and 180 wards nationwide.
The TECNO CAMON 20 Pro is a good option for Kenyan users who are looking for a stylish and powerful smartphone with a good camera and display. The phone retails at Ksh.32.000 in Kenya.
