TikTok surpasses 1 billion monthly active users

TikTok has announced that it has surpassed 1 billion monthly users as people around the world go to TikTok to be entertained as they learn, laugh, or discover something new. Despite the challenges the app has faced since it was launched in August 2018, TikTok has managed to rise above all odds that includes regulatory scrutiny from governments such as the US that were worried about the data collection practices of its parent company based in Beijing.

“At TikTok, our mission is to inspire creativity and bring joy. Today, we’re celebrating that mission and our global TikTok community. More than 1 billion people around the world now come to TikTok every month to be entertained as they learn, laugh, or discover something new, said TikTok in a press post.

“We’re honored to be a home for our immensely diverse community of families, small businesses, and creators who transform into our favorite stars,” added the company.

TikTok has now become a beloved part of life for many people around the world because of the creativity and authenticity that content creators in the app put. Its global community is remarkable in its ability to reach millions of people, across generations with so much content ranging from music, food, beauty, and fashion to art, causes, and culture.

TikTok’s popularity soared during the pandemic, becoming the most downloaded app in the world in the first quarter of 2020, with some 315 million downloads in that quarter alone according to app analytics company SensorTower. The company’s chief operating officer Vanessa Pappas has thanked users in a video she posted on the platform saying they have made the app a ‘truly special place.’

TikTok survived the American ban that had been issued through an executive order by the Trump administration that would have blocked the app from US app stores. When Biden was sworn into office, he signed an executive order revoking the Trump-era bans and only asked his commerce secretary to investigate the apps with ties to foreign adversaries like China, that may collect sensitive data from US consumers.
