Apple has today unveiled its new era 5G technology enabled smartphones during a virtual event live-streamed to over 2 million people on YouTube where it rolled out four new iPhone 12 devices. Chief Executive Tim Cook announced at the company’s Cupertino, California headquarters that Apple had made an interesting step in ushering fifth-generation iPhone smartphones.
He made an effort to describe why 5G technology would improve their customer experience by boasting of high-speed downloads and uploads, super quality video streaming, more responsive gaming, real-time interactivity in apps, FaceTime in high definition, and more. Customers will also be able to enjoy a secure, fast connection, reducing the need to connect to public Wi-Fi hotspots.
“Every decade there’s a new generation of technology that provides a step change in what we can do with our iPhones. The next generation is here. Today is the beginning of a new era for iPhone,” said Mr. Cook.
The newly designed iPhone 12 models feature expansive edge-to-edge Super Retina XDR displays for a brighter, more immersive viewing experience, and a new Ceramic Shield front cover, providing the biggest jump in durability ever on iPhone. The Apple-designed A14 Bionic, the fastest chip in a smartphone, powers every experience on iPhone 12, and coupled with an advanced dual-camera system, delivers meaningful new computational photography features and the highest quality video in a smartphone.
“The arrival of 5G marks the beginning of a new era for iPhone and we’re thrilled to bring these impressive new capabilities to our customers with iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing.
“We’re once again pushing the boundaries to deliver incredible computational photography advancements, Super Retina XDR displays, and the biggest leap in durability in iPhone history with the new Ceramic Shield front cover. Available in two great sizes, iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini take design to a new level in a new form factor that’s as beautiful as it is durable, and makes it easier than ever for customers to find the perfect iPhone to fit their lifestyle,” he added.
Apple, during the event, made a demonstration of how 5G iPhones could be helpful in downloading important medical images and how it would be beneficial to technology customers and business users who need faster connections.
Verizon Communications CEO Hans Vestberg, who participated at Apple’s launch event, acknowledged customers’ half-hearted 5G reception pointing out that 5G is now in 55 cities, 43 sports stadiums, and seven airports, but wider nationwide availability is happening gradually. He suggested that Apple’s new phones would lead many to reconsider.
“Until now, most people have taken a wait-and-see approach to 5G. They’ve been waiting for 5G to get real. Well, today, with iPhone, the wait is over,” Mr. Vestberg said.
iPhone 12 models offer the broadest 5G coverage worldwide equipped with Smart Data mode, which extends battery life by intelligently assessing 5G needs and balancing data usage, speed, and power in real-time. They also introduce MagSafe, offering high-powered wireless charging and an all-new ecosystem of accessories that easily attach to the iPhone.
Though the 5G technology is still at its relative infancy, the company now joins other giants like Nokia, and Samsung that have already announced 5G compatible phones, and other major networks have begun offering the services to their customers.
