Review: TECNO CAMON 16 Premier
On 3rd September 2020, TECNO Mobile hosted the first AR online launch themed ‘Break to the Next Level’ that saw the manufacturer bring to the market its finest new mobile phone, TECNO Camon 16 Premier. This time round, TECNO’s efforts in innovation bore fruit when it was awarded the “Camera Technology Innovation Smartphone Gold Award” for its outstanding camera functions at the Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin (IFA) – the world’s largest and most prestigious home appliance and consumer electronics event. IFA says TECNO has been constantly striving for excellence in product functions, image, user experience, and other aspects as it aims to promote innovation and the latest technologies of the electronics industry.
TECNO also announced that it had gained the approval by the United Nations specialized agency, the International Telecommunication Union SG16 (ITU-T SG16) on a new work item of a reference architecture for mobile terminal computational photography system to lead the formulation of the first international standard for mobile terminal computing and photography systems. All these achievements reaffirm TECNO’s capabilities as a leader in the mobile phone industry and I guess we can all agree that it has never stopped showcasing its advanced technical level and unique competitiveness in the international mobile industry.
TECNO CAMON 16 Premier comes just four months after CAMON 15 Premier was unveiled. TECNO has placed great emphasis on the camera function of the CAMON 16 Premier just like it did for CAMON 15. CAMON 16 comes with an industry-best 64MP quad rear camera with five flash that includes a 64-megapixel main camera, 8-megapixel ultra-wide camera, 2-megapixel depth sensor, and 2-megapixel low-light sensor with Quad-LED flash. The dual front camera setup includes a 48-megapixel main sensor and an 8-megapixel secondary shooter and is also equipped with an adjustable dual front flash. The camera’s 105° self-portrait angle of view is also 1.6 times higher than that of the conventional camera with the latest intelligent switching of the wide-angle lens mode.
CAMON 16 Premier is even more impressive at handling low-light and night situations as compared to CAMON 15. Though both phones are equipped with the world’s exclusive trademark TAIVOS™ (Image processing and enhancement lab for the CAMON series) technology, CAMON 16 is equipped to run complex and multiple algorithms superpositions to meet the shooting needs of different scenes. Dark and reverse shots are clear, and more new shooting functions are derived to provide users with a richer and more multi-dimensional shooting experience. The imaging time is only 4.68 seconds, while the imaging time of most other smartphones is 5.5 seconds or even 7 seconds. Users will be amazed by this phone’s great photos since TAIVOS™ is able to filter out image noise and optimize image clarity to deliver clear, balanced, vivid photographs even in low- to lower-light conditions, thereby enhancing night shooting effects.
This technology has enabled CAMON 16 Premier to not only protect portraits and avoid overexposure, but also make the background more transparent, bright, and clear. Additionally, the CAMON 16 Premier has an eye focus function that the focus of the portrait will not be lost when taking a side profile. In the Ultra Night Video-shoot mode, this mobile phone uses 2.9?m super-large pixels which can provide users with a brighter video shooting experience in dark environments and can also shoot stable 1080p videos.
The TECNO CAMON 16 prides in a combination of Super Hybrid Image Stabilization (HIS) and EIS+AIS that supports high-definition picture quality and high frame rate video shooting. Powered by the AI face detection and portrait blur algorithm, CAMON 16 Premier optimizes the basic portrait beauty function while adding the skin tone blur function to enhance the overall professional feel of the video – a feature that is definitely aligned with the needs of young users. The phone supports 960 frames of super slow-motion shooting, and the quality of the film is on-par with IMAX movie quality, which expands the joy of video shooting for all users.
TECNO CAMON 16 Premier is MediaTek’s 4G flagship chip MTK G90T and flagship Cortex-A76 CPU and Mali G76 GPU, with which, the overall performance of photography, networking, gaming, and image quality has increased by 11%. It runs on Android 10 and features a 6.9-inch full-HD+ (1,080×2,460 pixels) display with a pill-shaped hole-punch cutout on the top left corner of the screen and carries a newly upgraded battery fast charge of 33W ability that allows you to charge 70% of the phone’s 4500mAh battery in just 30 minutes to easily meet various demanding everyday needs. It has been redesigned to include multiple intelligent charging protections, such as safer power recovery and added new heat pipe to dissipate heat. This will effectively reduce the surface temperature by 2 degrees during charging, thereby reducing damage to the phone and extends battery life.

The onboard storage for CAMON 16 Premier is expandable using a MicroSD slot (up to 512GB). As to whether you should upgrade, sure, though the differences are not far and wide from each other, the camera and its video quality should give you a reason to. The price is also not higher from what CAMON 15 is currently retailing at. TECNO mobile directs us to purchase the new phone on Jumia online store at KES 28,499.
