Twitter shuts its legacy site, forces the new interface down our throats

First of all, I don’t like the new Twitter.com layout, and there is nothing I can do about it other than to accept and force it down my throat.  I saw the warning about my browser two weeks ago, and I ignored it. Twitter warned users hacking the site using unsupported browsers to access the original theme that their time was coming on June 1st, 2020, and urged them to disable their extensions and allow the official theme to run.

“This is the legacy version of twitter.com. We will be shutting it down on June 1, 2020. Please switch to a supported browser, or disable the extension which masks your browser,” read the notice.

The new version of its desktop website was rolled in July 2019. The navigation has a fairly large left-hand sidebar that shows all of Twitter’s key sections, i.e. Notifications, Direct Messages, Explore, Bookmarks, Profile, Lists, and Settings button.

“Today, we are starting to roll out a new Twitter.com – a refreshed and updated website that is faster, easier to navigate, and more personalized. The site has an updated look and feel that is more consistent with the Twitter you see on other devices, making it easier to access some of your favorite features, and with more options to make it your own,” Twitter said in its blog posted on July 15, 2019.

The organization and layout of the Twitter home screen is what many users including myself didn’t like. There are so many things I hate about the new version, for example, by default, it shows you a timeline based around ‘top tweets’ rather than a straightforward chronological list. I later found out that if one installs extensions it masks your browser to show the older site template, which I continued using until yesterday.

Now the tricks that can get us back to the original version are exhausted, and our favorite team is gone for good. If you still use Twitter on an older version or still have the supported browser extensions which modify your home screen, you will be redirected to the updated interface.
