KRA To Answer Questions On Contraband Sugar After Claims Of Involvement
KRA will today appear in a joint committee session following the recent sustained crackdown on contraband goods.
The Speaker of the National Assembly Hon Justin Muturi has directed that issues pertaining to the sugar sector before the various House Committees will now be addressed by a joint committee (The Committee on Agriculture and Livestock and the Committee on Trade, Industry & Cooperatives).
In this regard, the Joint Committee will address the issues facing the sugar sector. The Joint Committee deemed it necessary to receive information from KRA relating to the description, quantities, source, recipients, among other details on sugar importation for the period commencing January 2017 to date.
KRA has been part of the crackdown on contraband sugar in warehouses across counties. Also, government bodies have called on the sacking of KRA staff at boarder entry points for allowing entry of contraband and low quality goods into the country. There have also been suspicions that KRA officials conspired with owners of the companies used to import the sugar.
KRA will be appearing before the Joint Committee alongside the Cabinet Secretary – National Treasury.
