Women in Tech Africa (WITA) will hold a Women in Tech Week right here in Nairobi, Kenya. Yes, you heard that right. Nairobi is indeed turning out to be a technological frontier in sub-Saharan Africa. The event is scheduled to kick off on 26th September and come to a close on 30th September this year. It is less than a week away ladies and gentlemen.

Women in Tech Week will be the first and largest Women in Tech event on the African continent. The event will include curated user generated events with event partners across a whopping 40 countries with 400 event tracks. The 5 day event aims to bring together stakeholders supporting growth of women in technology and leadership.

Event Schedule

The schedule for the 5 days is as follows:

  • Monday, 26th September -Technology Day
  • Tuesday, 27th September -Leadership Day
  • Wednesday, 28th September -Entrepreneur Day
  • Thursday, 29th September -Work Life Day
  • Friday, 30th September -Girls and Talent

Some of the topics that will be discussed include:

  1. Helping introduce girls to Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) careers.
  2. Opportunities of remote work places which they refer by the phrase, “From being at home to working at home.”
  3. Financing your start-up and crowd funding
  4. How women can brand themselves in a male-dominated world
  5. Equipping women with strategies to survive in a male-driven culture

There will also be discussions on the impact of digital economy in Africa with a focus on cloud storage, Internet of Things (IoT), smart infrastructure and mobile payment.

WITA is an organisation founded by Ethel Cofie solely to support African women working in tech. The event is being organised by WITA in partnership with SAP Global a software giant. Among the key speakers during the conference will be our very own Managing Editor at Kachwanya.com, Odipo Riaga, and Sam Wakoba of TechMoran.

The event promises to bring together over 40,000 women onsite and virtually. Did you see what they did there? Talk of teleconferencing. A technological innovation that eliminates distance as a barrier for real time collaboration. This is the time you wish that the Microsoft HoloLens was into production stage because they have displayed a demo of how guys can also hold meetings virtually using it. You literally see the other party seated across you on the conference table, but virtually.

The Women in Tech Week is somehow synonymous to the Social Media Week event that was held earlier in the month right here in Kenya for the first time. This is so because the event will run simultaneously in other cities across the globe during the same period.

The onsite events will take place across 10 countries simultaneously. The African countries hosting the event include yours truly Kenya, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa. The other countries hosting the onsite events include China, USA, Germany and UK.

The African countries that will be holding virtual events include Tanzania, Uganda, Congo, Angola, Mozambique, Madagascar, Malawi, Zambia, Niger, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Cameroon and Burkina Faso.
