Jumia to get in the payments processing industry with Jumia Pay
I’d say the payments processing industry in Africa, and specifically Kenya has been quiet for a while after the MPesa entry. The industry has been fairly busy with the very capable PesaPal being a known one. Enter stage left: Jumia Pay.
According to TechCabal, this new payments platform is joining the Jumia (formerly Africa Internet Group) fold and is a reflection of AliPay, Alibaba’s own payments solution. It can be used for payments in the Jumia services (Jumia Food, Jumia Travel, Jumia Online Mall, Jumia House, Jumia Cars etc.) as well as other third party payments such as payment of utility bills et cetera.
Jumia CEO, Jeremy Hodara is quoted saying ‘Jumia Pay will provide a safe, secure and convenient shopping experience for all Jumia customers across its various platforms, and also foster financial inclusion’.
It is said Jumia Pay will first launch in Jumia’s home turf and biggest market country – Nigeria before spreading to all the other country Jumia services are currently offered.
