All virtual communications and Social Media will severely be disrupted by Virtual Reality
In the article Facebook and Social Media is about to be overhauled thanks to Facebook Social VR, I described how Mike Schroepfer, the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Facebook while at the conference in San Francisco, US held a meeting with his Facebook college who was at Facebook’s headquarters in Menlo Park, California, US visited three sites namely St Pancras train station in London, Piccadilly Circus in Westminster London , and Tower Bridge also in London. The two were able to take a VR selfie at the Tower Bridge which Schroepfer posted on his Facebook feed just by placing the selfie insider a virtual Facebook mailbox.
Today’s Social Media and online communication is primarily used to exchange voice (phones), text (SMS, WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, etc), pictures and videos either through direct to direct communication or to the entire population. To have a meeting through the current Social Media platforms, those intending to meet can only use the platforms to arrange for a time and place of the meeting.
Virtual Reality is however disrupting these as it ushers in the possibility of two people worlds apart having a real life like virtual meeting at any place of their choice world wide. Other than this, the future virtual communication will involve stimulating the five senses where those meeting will be able to hold and touch one another, eat together probably the same food in a restaurant, and even indulge in real life gaming and body to body sensual activities.
