Many people are suffering from brain related diseases that later lead to high death rate or permanent mental illness. Scientists around the globe are working on treatment but early detection and prevention is always the best way of fighting disease outbreaks. Early detection helps determine the appropriate medical services and support systems that are effective in treating an infection.
The brain is a very complicated part of the body and detecting changes can be very challenging. Researchers at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) have been working in this area for some time and may have found an answer thanks to existing technology in the form of a digital pen.
An example of a brain condition that has affected many is dementia. This is a chronic or persistent disorder of the mental processes caused by brain disease or injury and marked by memory disorders, personality changes, and impaired reasoning.
The tests done by the digital pen are useful in determining early brain condition but it’s hard for doctors to objectively assess the results. In addition, judgments are made mainly by assessing the final drawing and in most cases leaves aside the subject’s drawing behavior.
The developed technology is used to provide rapid analysis of the collected data, giving the doctor an increased chance of making a more objective and early diagnosis. The digital pen is more accurate than the existing method used to detect brain conditions.
CSAIL principal investigator Cynthia Rudin said, “We’ve improved the analysis so that it is automated and objective. With the right equipment, you can get results wherever you want, quickly, and with higher accuracy.” Reports Digital Trends.
Neurologists and other experts will be able to use the technology in medical centers since the team is working on ways to simplify the system’s interface. Complex diseases always give doctors a hard time in treating them and early detection is always the hardest thing. Modern technology is currently making work easier in every field like business, science and entertainment.
Digital pens are currently making headlines in the digital world. In July we featured world’s most powerful pens; Livescribe and Phree. Livescribe’s pen uses special paper which helps the system digitize your writing for you. With Phree, you’re separating input and output, like moving a mouse in your hand and seeing the cursor on the screen move—nothing comes out of the pen when you scribble it, but the exact lines show up on the screen.
