Safaricom launches yet another tariff at the break of new operator Equitel

Written by

Even as Equitel launches mobile services to take on Safaricom’s M-Pesa, Safaricom has launched yet another post-pay tariff offering bundled Voice, SMS and Data services dubbed ‘Advantage Plus’.

The service is available to all Safaricom customers who may wish to migrate to the monthly post-pay with three bundle offers ranging from an entry level ksh2,999 package to one of Ksh 9,999.

According to Sylvia Mulinge, Director- Consumer Business Unit-Safaricom, the new tariff is intended to enable subscribers access up to 85% more value as compared to other tariffs. Also, Safaricom is looking to take advantage of the increasing demand for blended offerings that span across voice and data.

Today, mobile subscribers are more keen to extract as much value from their mobile use therefore opting for Post-pay services in comparison to pre-pay which however remains the predominant market in Kenya. The introduction of Advantage Plus will supplement the successful Karibu PostPay bundle scheme introduced in October 2011, which saw the number of Safaricom subscribers on the PostPay tariffs increase to over 700,000 by December 2015.

However much the package will include no roll-over of resources after the 30-day basis, this comes as a strategic move after the telco service launched the new suite of data bundles aimed at re-affirming its growing demand for data products among the core PrePay subscriber base.

For the first time in the market, subscribers will be able to sign up for the service using their phones, without needing to go into a retail outlet. Safaricom customers will simply need to dial *100# from their PrePay lines or *200# from their PostPay lines to subscribe to the Advantage Plus Plans.

Even as the new tariff is meant to supplement Karibu Tariff,  Safaricom will be retaining Karibu postpay for existing Karibu postpay customers. Existing Safaricom Karibu postpay customers will be able to join the Advantage Plus packages on a voluntary basis. Their existing resources will be moved to Advantage Plus and the prevailing expiry dates will apply.
