Leading online free classified service, OLX Kenya is the title sponsor of this year’s Kenya Social Media Awards (SOMA) a platform for individuals and organizations to celebrate the contribution of social media in the social, economic and political spheres by recognizing those who have used it positively to impact lives.

With a theme “Making Social Media Work For You”, the event will convene various social media users including corporate organizations, celebrities, SMEs, students, county governments and national government agencies.

Following a successful inaugural edition last year which had 25 categories that included Social Media Innovation Of The Year, Best use of social media among Government bodies, corporate twitter account of the year, twitter and facebook campaign of the year among others, the team has plans on adding other categories for 2014 awards and will at the same time review the categories that scooped awards last year to ensure all those who have immensely contributed to the growth of social media are appreciated.

The Olx social media awards is not just about awarding individuals, but also recognizing the various corporates who have acknowledged social media’s reach and are using it effectively to advertise their business and handle customer complaints.

Social media is now a core marketer for a vast number of organizations that have made Facebook, Twitter and other social media channels interaction platforms where the audience who in this case is the consumer or client airs complaints as well as gives feed back to the organization on a product or service. Political leaders have also taken on social media to interact with citizens who in return communicate with them pointing out loopholes in the society among other issues facing the common ‘mwananchi’

Unlike past years where happenings where first communicated through media houses, social media is now the leading informer may it be on crime, events or even new innovations. According to OLX Kenya CEO, Mr Peter Ndiangu’i, the initiative is in line with the company’s strategy to promote the growth of businesses and communication through social media.

Soma has been honored to receive recognition and awards for its distinguished reputation over the years for the extraordinary contribution in the engineering sector. The Awards stand a proof of Soma’s success and achievement.

The anticipated Awards will be used to highlight the influence of social media on brand building and encourage companies to intensify online presence.
