The movie industry is once again crying foul over pirated movies. They want the government to fight  illegal DVD shops rampart in Nairobi, Nakuru, Mombasa, Kisumu and the other big towns in Kenya. According to James Muthengi, a film director, these illegal DVD shops have caused low turn-out in theaters, forcing a number of theaters to close shop. Theaters in Kenya Cinema, for example, closed shop in 2012 due to dwindling revenue.

Although the movie industry would like to blame illegal movies as the sole cause of their low performance, it is important to point out the high cost of watching movies in theaters or even buying original content. The movie industry especially Hollywood is known for making insane profits by pricing their content at prices affordable only to the high end market segment especially for those in developing countries. Ordinary citizens in these countries can never see the logic of spending over Kshs 800 only to watch a movie worth about 1 hour 30 minutes when the same amount can be used to feed a family of four for two or three days.

Even the few who visit theaters, at such high prices, are not able to visit the theaters to watch every single movie that has been released that would interest them. I do believe that the few who visit the theaters do it only to watch a really really important movie (like the guys who flocked to watch 12 Years a Slave in Kisumu) or they visit the theaters as dating venues.

Anyway, if the government listened to the complains and decided to close down the illegal DVD outlets, people will be left with only two options 1. To visit the theaters and 2. To buy original DVDs. Would you visit the theaters? Let us know of your answer by responding to the first poll above. Or/and ,would you buy the original DVDs? Let us know of your answer in the poll below. We’ll publish the results of the survey in due course.
