A New Television Station (ok similar to a TV station) has been launched online. The Mashinani TV strives to promote the positive aspects of Kenya to the world away from the daily news of crime, unemployment, poverty, and slums, and corruption. Mashinani (or Local) TV is basically an online documentary channel aimed at show casing the positive activities and ventures the youth in Kenya are involved in across the country that in one way or another positively impact on the society in order to improve the perception people have on the Kenyan youth.
“We are on a mission to inspire a hungry generation to the ideals of self-reliance and to celebrate local content through sustained generation of stories from our diverse cultures. Our vision is to use documentaries and multimedia to document, distribute and preserve our stories. We hope that our stories will help spur change and celebrate our heritage,” said the Kenya Fixer Agency Limited team, the documentary firm that runs Mashinani TV.
Mashinani is also involved in multimedia and training to nurture young talent in TV products.
One thing is clear though, Mashinani TV being an online based channel will not be watched by majority of Kenyans. Data cost is still prohibitive and makes most people fret online content tailored around large amount of data consumption. We would say, “we pray the government to come in between to help in this data cost problem.”
