Written by

It has been a long  time since President Kibaki gave an order for all the sim cards in the country to be registered but now it seems there is some movement. According to CCK, Kenyans have up to 31 July to have their Sim cards registered by their mobile phone network operators or risk having their phones blocked.  The details required for the registration:

  • Id Number
  • Date of Birth
  • Residential Address

CCK would launch the process on Monday working hand in hand with the four mobile network operators Zain, Safaricom, Orange and Yu.

Phone thieves..be warned, your days are numbered here.

  • Well those without ID I suppose are not meant to have phones.. I think it is the reason why phones are still not allowed in Kenyan schools. Plus in the case of MPESA you must have ID to register for MPESA

  • the governments plans to establish this registration is ok but i personally do not support it. for one who will be responsible for this information. what blocks them from misusing or selling my personal information to third parties or even misusing my personal information. it may be a good platform but without a legal protection for my information, i will be unable to control how much of my information may be used by the government or by the operator considering that since some do get sold off almost yearly…what law protects my information in such scenario?

  • I have just learned that those who do not have IDs are required to provide (f) Student Card from an accredited educational institution.

  • According Safaricom..twitter response..Registered M-PESA subscribers & Individual PostPay Subscribers need not register again , as they already have their details. If you are Safaricome subscriber then you have nothing to worry about.

  • I am not sure how they will handle this but i think there should be a way that people would know that their private data is safe. Since it was a Government directives , i guess the ball is the court of the Government to ensure that such data is not abused by the mobile phone operators
