Unlocked Modem is a big crap..don’t waste your time

Safaricom modem

After buying Safaricom modem sometime back and using it for sometime , i got tired with their high prices. So took it upon myself to go on a personal journey to get better affordable alternative.? That is when a friend of mine hinted to me that i don’t need to buy another modem. There was a greater? option, which? was to get my modem unlocked. According to him once i had Unlocked my Modem, then i would be able? to use different Sim cards from different networks (i.e Zain,Yu, Safaricom and Orange) in Kenya. Easy, i went to Facebook and joined Unlock modem group and in the process met this one very friendly guy, who helped me to calculate unlock codes? in a matter of seconds.

The following instructions were also easily available:

How to enter the code…
insert a different simcard from another operator, the modem software will prompt for an 8 digit code.
insert it then press o.k. open modem program e.g safaricom broadband, mobile partner, zain e-go, etc.
Click on Tools>Options>Profile management…new(on top right) Then enter these settings:
1. profile: safaricom
click static
APN: safaricom
Access no.: *99#
Username: saf
pass: data
click ‘save’

1. profile: Zain
click static
APN: ke.celtel.com
Access no.: *99#
Username: leave blank
pass: leave blank
click ‘save’

1. profile: YU
click static
APN: internet
Access no.: *99#
Username: leave blank
pass: leave blank
click ‘save’

1. profile: Orange
click static
APN: bew.orange.co.ke
Access no.: *99***1#
Username: leave blank
pass: leave blank
click ‘save’
‘OK’

After that process, i was over the top . Being armed with the most diverse modem ever, I was finally in a position to play games with Safaricom, Zain, Yu and Orange. Take advantage of? any cheaper option available at any particular time.

Zain Modem

Zain Modem

Well my joy did not last for long, i started with Zain line, the modem true to the promise accepted the line and recognized it immediately. But that was it, the thing was damn slow, took like 10 minute to open one page in Firefox browser. Don’t even talk about snails..they are faster than unlocked modems.

Next stop was orange, and it was the same story, even the dark days before the arrival of Fiber optic cables? were much better than what the unlocked modems are cable of . At the end i was forced to go back to the damn Safaricom

Orange

Orange

I don’t know if it is just me, but I would not advice anybody to waste his/her time unlocking their modems. Just go to the shop and buy a new modem. Because unlocking would not? help and if someone out there think otherwise please tell us or do i say speak now or forever hold your piece

  • @ Salim I do agree with you that Unlocking the modem is one of the most liberating experience an internet surf can experience with his/her modem . I unlocked my E160 modem sometime mid last year. I used Zain for a while but am now using YU unlimited { 1k per month} . Honest for anyone who does not need to download heavy stuff from the net, i would recommend Yu or any other non 3G network.

The author of the above article point that "…..would not advice anybody to waste his/her time unlocking their modems. Just go to the shop and buy a new modem. Because unlocking would not help…." That the biggest Lie i have heard in the history of Modem. Guys don't be duped their exists other better internet service providers apart from saf-con; so go ahead and unlock your modem.

    Thanks.

    Elijah August 12, 2010 13:06
  • Msemakweli, thanks alot for these links. However, mine is an orange modem, doesn't have an IMEI but has an IMSI, which is still 15 digits. When i unlock the cardlock code, instead of displaying IMEI, it displays ESN. It still goes ahead t say the modem has been unlocked, but when i insert another SIM it cannot connect to the internet.

I know you have a viable advise for me. Please help!!

  • What kind of crap is this… Are you tired of life or what? You are just trying to talk people out of finding freedom in the devices they bought but tell you something, you are loosing. If you work for safaricom or something, then face it, Kenyans just got a little bit wiser with their money and Technology is getting better and quite unfriendly especially for safaricom. The only evidence of safaricom in most modems is just the logo which can be scrapped off and the safaricom software and icon in the device file system which with some few minutes behind a computer, all that could be replaced with any other .png and .exe files. So if unlocking you safaricom modem turned out as crap to you, well keep you the bull crap to yourself. You can as well walk into any safaricom shop and buy yourself a new safaricom modem then let the selfish businessmen dubbed "THE BETTER OPTION" make use of the money which you seem to have more that you need.

  • That's crazy. Most of this dongles come from Huawei. Thats the mother company, saf, zain, orange etc arer just rebrands! The speeds vary from one simcard from anmother and have nothing to do with the modem being unlocked or not. Wanna contest that! Bring it on!

I unlocked my safaricom modem with a hope of getting free chances from all service providers, but do i say bwana, the modem was so slow than a damn tortoise! The clips I was watching live nonstop, were interrupted by a series of stops here and there. To me, it is a lesson well learnt.

  • i have also experienced this. i unlocked a saf e160 modem and couldn’t believe what i was seeing! the modem became very slow when browsing the internet i eventually just switched back to saf. just go buy a new modem from a different service provider rather than unlocking the one that you have. (true story)

  • Safaricom is the only option for internet access in this country, the challenge though is its price! it swallows the 999 bundles like a thirsty cow. I spend more than 3000/= per week and when I check my usage, it is very little that I prefer to do my heavy internet needs at a cyber in town. Safaricom is Expensive like a no mans business!!! we need another savior who has speed and good price, Don’t tell me about Airtel, Yu, or Orange because I have tested all of them. I have a heap of modems in my house and don’t know what to do with them! I begun with the Telkom wireless, then Safaricom, then Celtel, Zain, YU, AIRTEL and now am sick of these con men!!!! these networks are conning Kenyans.

  • You need to understand that until recently safaricom were the only ones offering 3G speeds on GSM. You can try Orange now in 3G supported areas and you will get a better experience. Yu and Zain are still using EDGE.
