111 are now confirmed dead in Nakuru tanker tragedy and several injured. Kenya Red Cross says most of the over 111 dead were women and children, besides the men who rushed to the scene upon learning that an oil tanker had overturned along the road.
Prime Minister Raila Odinga and several Cabinet ministers including Internal Security minister George Saitoti, Public Health Minister Beth Mugo and Education minister Sam Ongeri and some Members of Parliament have visited the scene this Sunday morning. The Prime Minister gave a statement confirming the grave situation and drew parallel to the same kind of accident sometime back in Siaya where people rushed to the accident scene to loot, only for someone to drop cigarette and the ensuing explosion was devastating..
The petrol tanker is said to have exploded after 7.pm. Villagers rushed to the scene to scoop the fuel. The police effort to prevent people from siphoning fuel did not bear fruit. Actually there is report that five police officers trying to prevent people from going to the scene of accident were burnt to death.
The spokesman of Kenya Red cross society confirmed that 178 people are already hospitalized…The recovery effort is continuing, meanwhile the government has launched investigation to what caused the Nakuru accident
