S Pen sets Samsung Galaxy Note 3 apart

Galaxy Note III has kept with the trend, increasing the screen size by a further 0.2 inches. Note I had 5.3″, Note II came with 5.5″ and now we are at 5.7″. We can therefore safely postulate that Note IV will be at 5.9″; of course with smartphones size does matter…the bigger the better. Now with Galaxy Gear, the bigger could be best! What has however inspired us is the cool new way to use the stylus, it might stop being a forgotten accessory. Here are some specs that can entice you into having a Note 3 for Dec holidays.

Screen

Samsung has been able to add 0.2 inches of screen size to the width of Note II, but increasing the height a little bit. Note III has a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED screen with Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution featuring 368 ppi density. This is the first of the Galaxy Note handsets to sport a 1080p display as the previous models had 720p screens.

Body

Compared with Note II, Note III is closely the same size but thinner and lighter. It measures 151.2mm length by 79.2mm width by 8.3 thick and weighs 168 grams. It has a back cover made of a synthetic leather that has been called “pleather” which is basically a composite material that looks like leather and feels like leather but smells different. The phablet  has sharper angles on its rounded edges making it look more rectangular than the predecessor. It’s easy to hold in one hand in terms of weight but you still need your two hands to use it.

Memory

The phablet will come in two main variants one featuring 32GB internal storage and the other a 64GB variant. It has also been mentioned that a 16GB variant will be available. All the variants will have 3GB RAM with ability to expand storage through a microSD card.

Processor

Note III has two variants processor wise. There is one powered by 2.3GHz quad-core snapdragon 800 processor which will support LTE category 4 and low variant powered by by 1.9GHz octacore Exynos 5 Octacore supporting 3G networks. The latter version will basically be for the developing world.

Camera

The cam         era has followed Galaxy S4 route featuring a 13MP rear camera that can shoot 4K videos at 60fps:1080p with a new CRI LED flash that should improve low-light photography. There is also the 2MP front camera with HD recording capability able to shoot videos at 30fps.

Connectivity

On data the Note III will have a 3G model and 4G model using  LTE category 4.The phone will also feature Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi 802.11ac, , NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 and an infrared blaster for using the Note 3 as a universal remote.

Battery

Samsung has fitted a larger 3200mAh battery on Note III that they say should offer 40% more time compared with Note II.

Improved Multitasking

Multitasking has also been improved allowing users to run two applications at once side by side. During the Note 3’s launch, Samsung showed off two ChatOn conversations running simultaneously. With the new multitasking capabilities, you can easily drag and drop a text or an image from one window to the other instead of copy pasting only mode in previous models. One can also split one app in half to use the same app in two windows. When using an app and you want to use another app for a quick task, you may call the second app on top of the current app, use it and discard it or minimize it. The quick access apps include the calculator, phone dialer, and the YouTube app. The quick apps are called upon by grabbing the S Pen, calling up the Air command and selecting the option to call up one of the quick apps. More on S pen below.

S Pen

We have saved the best for last; a multi-functional stylus. Hold up the S-Pen on the display and it brings up five Quick commands for quick note taking from anywhere in the UX. Samsung says the S Pen will be the key for unlocking Note III’s beauty.

s-pen

  • Scrapbook is a handy tool for collecting information from various sources and organizing them into one place. It also saves the address from where the information was obtained e.g. URLs from web pages and YouTube links.
  • S Finder Is the search function for the S pen. With this one can search for all phone content including apps, help items, and even scribbled notes.
  • The Screen Write is the print screen function for S pen and allows one to add tags and insert notes.
  • Action Memo allows users to hand write a note and automatically execute a function. For example you may scribe a phone number and immediately call the number from the note.
  • Pen Window Is the feature that will allow you to call in the quick apps. You simply draw a box on screen and options for calling up the quick apps appears.

With improved hardware and added S Pen functionalities, better multitasking and better quality camera, I see no reason for anyone who can afford this phablet not buying it. Pricing to be released soon. Stay tuned.
