Instagram now lets you save drafts of your photos

If you are on Instagram you can relate to how much of a pain it is to spend precious time coming up with the wittiest caption, perfecting the shadows and highlights or making sure the filters are impeccable, then having to lose all these edits just by accidentally hitting the back button. This is especially daunting for those who run pages for multiple brands.

The new ‘Save Draft’ feature now saves you that mini heart attack you get when your brilliant work of art ceases to be. Once you create a post and glam it up, you can save it as a draft and share it later.

The feature was first spotted back in July, with just a select few seeing the “Save Draft” option in their app. This was part of Instagram’s experiment to see how the user base would respond to the feature and from the look of it, the response must have been quite incredible.

Previously, hitting the ‘back’ button on the app would discard all your edits but the new feature prompts you to either discard or save your photo to draft when leaving the editing screen.

However, you cannot save an unedited post, not sure why anyone would want to save an unedited photo when they can easily retrieve it from their gallery, hence you first have to either edit it, tag someone or add a caption or location.

How to save post as draft:

1. Tap the camera icon at the bottom of the screen, then take or upload a photo or video
2. Add effects, filters, a caption or your location
3. Go back to the filtering and editing step, then tap the back arrow in the top left
4. Select Save Draft at the bottom of the screen

Unfortunately, the new feature doesn’t let you tweak any of the edits made on the photo or video once it has been saved as draft. This is quite a bummer and defeats the purpose of having to save the post in the first place.

To return to the draft post, users need to tap the Camera icon at the bottom of the screen, then select “Library”. Posts will appear at the bottom of the screen under the title “Drafts”.

Limitations aside, the draft option is quite incredible and not only comes as a blessing to Instagram lovers who would like to put in a little more thought into their caption but also businesses and brands as it allows them to prepare multiple posts in advance of publishing.

The new feature comes months after Instagram introduced ‘Instagram stories’, their version of snapchat, pinch-to-zoom option on videos and better low-light performance for Stories in the previous update.

The update will be available on both iOS and Android.
