Avegant Glyph is a display for your eyes only

How do you watch your favorite private movies e.g. porn without getting worried that an unwanted eye might suddenly pop up to catch you red handed? To enjoy private viewing, some people have screens in their private rooms (closets) while others choose to use the bed room’s TVs. For those not lucky enough to have closets or TVs in the bed room, they just decide to use the living room’s TV but at the risk of getting caught.

Watching porn is not the only time you’d desire to have a screen all to yourself. At times you just want to enjoy a game, a normal movie or even a TV programme without being distracted by all the movements and the noises around you. For instance if you are in a public bus and there is this YouTube video you’d want to watch without creating curiosity in the eyes of the neighboring passenger, your smartphone’s screen won’t be of much help.

So just as speakers are for the public and the earphones/headphones are for individual ears, innovators have come up with screens for your eyes only; similar to virtual reality headsets such as the Oculus Rift. There are key differences been Glyph and Oculus Rift though. Technologies such as Oculus Rift rely on high-resolution LCD displays placed close to the eyes but Glyph promises to send images directly to the retina through a process Avegant likes to call virtual retina display.

Avegant Glyph technically does not have a screen. It creates images by focusing the incoming signal to a set of optics from where it is directed to a set of mirrors (2 million mirrors), which reflect the image to another set of optics that direct the image directly to the retina. This video explains how it works.

The advantage of focusing the image directly to the retina (elimination of screen) is that Avegant Glyph eliminates effects such as the dreaded “screen door effect” that happens when you place a screen close to your face and also drastically reduces eye strain. Avegants says the viewing is more natural than ever.
