ArtPC Pulse – a new cylindrical desktop from Samsung

artpc pulse

Despite the setback Samsung is experiencing with its flagship device the Galaxy Note 7, the company has quietly unveiled the ArtPC Pulse. This is not the normal desktop PC that we are accustomed to but rather a cylindrical desktop. It is literally cylindrical in shape. It is a modular desktop which means that you can swipe out parts easily and add new features to match your own needs

Currently only the omnidirectional speaker unit by Harman Kardon, an unusual item to have on a desktop PC that is located at the top, and the HDD are modular. Samsung has not confirmed if you will also be able to customize other bits of the ArtPC Pulse.

The ArtPC Pulse will come in two configurations:

First

The cheaper version will feature:

  • Intel 2.7 GHz Core i5 Skylake Processor
  • 8 GB of DDR4 RAM
  • 256 GB NVMe SSD
  • AMD Radeon RX 460 (2 GB)

Second

This version is almost the same as the first one expect for the following features:

  • 4 GHz Core i7
  • 16 GB RAM
  • Includes 1 TB SATA HDD module. This is in addition to 256 GB SSD.

This desktop PC is not meant for the hardcore gamers. It is more being targeted at creative who want a little extra graphics power for crunching high-resolution photos and videos.

Samsung will offer a 1TB HDD module, but stock storage is a 256GB NVMe SSD. Both of the versions of the PC will also feature a HDMI port, 4 USB Type A (presumably 3.0), USB Type C, SD Card slot and Ethernet Port, none of which come as a surprise on a 2016 desktop PC.

Samsung is set to start shipping the ArtPC Pulse from October 28. The ArtPC Pulse i5 model is expected to cost $1199 (approximately Ksh.120,000). The i7 model is expected to retail at $1599 (approximately Ksh.160,000).
