Nakumatt holdings ventures into Kenyan film

Nakumatt holdings has partnered with Planet Media cinemas in conjunction with Nairobi Film Festival to celebrate the first film festival in the country.

The main feature of the launch was the award winning film ‘Katikati’, which has been celebrated around the world in the recently completed promotional tour; and a selection of other outstanding local features and short films.

Speaking during the launch, the new Nakumatt Holdings Marketing Director, Andrew Dixon, re-affirmed the company’s commitment to supporting the local filmmakers. “The film industry in Kenya is growing fast, and there are numerous existing and emerging talent that need to be nurtured. It is for this reason, that we are proud to partner with the Nairobi Film Festival to set a stage for local producers and actors to showcase their work.”

The Nairobi Film Festival Director, Sheba Hirst says that their aim is to expand the Kenya audiences in local theatres by presenting notable films from around the world in a lively and enjoyable format. In addition, she says that the role of film is to help the society examine itself from the selected films that picture the community and showcase our culture.

Although the film industry in Kenya is small compared to Hollywood or Nollywood, it has been on the rise in recent years, with various Riverwood films getting international recognition. The government has also come out strongly to support the industry, and this has resulted to the sprouting of more youthful talent.

The Nairobi Film Festival marks Kenya’s entry into the calendar of annual film events that have been taking place around the world; with the likes of the prestigious Cannes and Toronto film festivals commanding the world’s center stage each year.

The first screening of the film will take place at the Planet Media cinemas at the Prestige Plaza, and the subsequent ones will be shown interchangeably at Prestige plaza and The Elephant in Lavington.
