PlayStation VR headset, for PS4 consoles, is here to shift the focus from HTC Vive and Oculus Rift

PlayStation VR

This is the year Virtual Reality kits have gone mainstream. First we were introduced to the high end Oculus Rift and HTC Vive VR headsets. Sony has realised this is the time for a massive virtual reality revolution and they do not want to miss out in the action. It is for this reason that they announced they will be releasing their own VR headset. For the tech and hard-core gaming community out there, Sony has hinted that the PlayStation VR will start hitting the stores from 13th October 2016. That is roughly six weeks from now.

The PlayStation VR will be compatible with the PlayStation 4 consoles already in the market. The setup process is very simple. Just plug in and play. As for the availability of ready to consume VR content worry not. Sony has already gone ahead and signed on more than 230 development houses. The development houses which will be responsible for creating VR content range from small indie operations to big names like EA.

With the PlayStation VR you can let your friends enjoy a game with you. You can decide to let your friends see what you are actually seeing through the VR headset. This is courtesy of a feature referred to as the PlayStation VR Social Screen. Through this feature you can project what you see in your headset onto a TV screen or monitor so that your friends can jump into the action. Hence you do not only immerse yourself into the experience but you also involve others.

The PlayStation VR promises to immerse you in the game with an unparalleled sense of presence. Not only will the games make you lose track of time but they will also make you forget where you actually are. From the moment you slip on PlayStation VR, the new Virtual Reality system for PlayStation 4, you’ll experience games in an entirely new way. You’ll be at the centre of the action, living every detail of extraordinary new worlds – and you’ll feel like you’re actually inside the game. Now, you can step beyond the screen and climb into the game.

The headset has been designed to be as light and as comfortable as possible. It’s effortless to slip on and off, while its minimal weight is supported by an adjustable headband that’ll fit everyone. The headset is even usable when you are wearing glasses.

Some of the games that will be compatible with the PlayStation VR include;

  • STAR WARS Battlefront                                     EVE: Valkyrie
  • 100ft Robot Golf Tekken 7
  • RIGS Mechanized Combat League Batman  Arkham VR
  • REZ Infinite PlayStation VR WORLDS

Expected price $399 (approximately Ksh.40,000).

In the follow up article we shall look at the hardware specifications and what will be included in the box. It is worth noting that we haven’t heard of any VR headset for the Xbox one till this far. Microsoft has to come up with something for it to counter Sony.
