Iphone 6

Kenya is basically an Android market but still there are those few who still cannot do away with an iPhone. The iPhone 6, despite having received negative reception in Android dominated markets thanks to bendgate, still managed to perform impressively since launch and introduction in Kenya. Most Kenya iPhone lovers consider iPhone 6 as thin and sexy and there are those who say it is bigger and better with impressive battery life. The phone is amazing because it compensated most of the shortcomings that iPhone had in the past but iPhone 6 has a better camera, improved battery life and a boosted processor. The phone is classic and if you come from places where thieves are on every corner you should try and reach home early because the phone is a jackpot. The phone goes for $ 549.99.

Lumia 640

The popular believe of people had about Windows App is that they lag behind and its a disaster. The Microsoft Lumia 640 was welcomed warmly in the market since it was among the first in a new breed of Windows Phones. With a larger screen, more RAM and a different design language from its predecessor. Ladies love the phone because it has an impressive display and a good camera. The Lumia 640 goes for about Kshs 19, 999 which a super favorable price given that it has amazing features that never disappoint. Microsoft Lumia 640 is a phone that could easily find itself in top 5 but given the rather high price and that it is a rather new entrant in the Kenyan market, it managed to surpass the popularity of iPhone 6 but a slight margin.

Eight – LG G3

Most people don’t know about this phone because the Life’s Good company never shout about their real deal staffs. The LG G2 was also an amazing phone but the launch was done without much gusto the same way the LG G3 was done. If you are a guy who likes unique things that are perfect and out of reach by everybody you should definitely land your hands on this phone. The LG G3 has an Android 5.0 Lollipop which is smoother and the price is favorable which is almost half the price of iPhone 6. The design is dope because the phone has a new metallic skin unlike the all-plastic uni body of the LG G2. The G3 certainly looks more premium, and offers the removable battery and microSD slot. You can get the phone with Kshs 48,000.

Seven – Infinix Hot X507

Infinix hot x507

This is a cheap smartphone if you happen to know about Jumia. Infinix partnered with Jumia to sell the phone at almost half its original price. You could reserve the Infinix Hot X507 at a totally insane price of Kshs 6,999, although over the past few months the price of the device has been climbing steadily and today the price is about Kshs 7,800 making it one of the cheapest Android Kitkat smartphones with high end specs in the market right now. The phone is much faster, better multitasking and you have limitless access to almost a million apps from the Play store. In addition, the Infinix X507 is powered by a 1.3 GHz quad-core processor from Mediatek, Mali-400MP2 GPU (dual-core) and 1 GB of RAM. The whole system is fed from a 2000 mAh Li-Ion battery and has a remarkable 16 GB of internal storage. There are those of you who would have loved to see this phone in position one, but again the mainstream manufacturers like Microsoft and Samsung are rolling out devices to offer formidable competition.

Six – Samsung Galaxy Note 4

Galaxy Note 4

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is a masterpiece. It has a better display and a great camera making the Note 4 for an excellent smartphone. The most catchy part about the phone’s design is the the back which is stylized in faux leather that dropped the stitching from previous year’s Galaxy Note 3. Complementing its plastic frame, a metal band runs around the edges fusing the glass to the frame. This makes the device look a lot more stylish. The phone is armed with 3 GB of RAM and a speedy 2.7 GHz Quad-core Snapdragon processor, Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is designed to multitask between the most demanding apps available today. The price estimation is currently Kshs 64, 999. It it were not for the likes of low price Infinix Hot Note X551 and Tecno Boom J7, this phone could have been ranked in position two or three. However, the ever introduction of cheap gadgets with almost similar high end specs as you would find in this masterpiece means we may see this phone drop out from our ranking in the subsequent months.

Five – Techno Boom J7

Tecno Boom J7

This is the phone for music loves. On a lighter note, is also meant for those who love nailing people as it can be used as a hammer, literally. Techno has come a long way by manufacturing quality smartphones at affordable prices. Techno Boom J7 has a 16 GB memory, 8MP camera and 2MP front facers, 1GB RAM, dual SIM, micro SD storage of up to 32 GB and Android 4.4.2 KitKat. The features are almost the same as the Infinix Hot 507. For Techno Boom J7 I can only say it’s amazing and affordable because it goes for about Kshs 13,500 so if you want a phone/hammer you better get yourself a Techno Boom J7. If the price of this phone drops below Kshs 10,000, then you may as well expect it to touch position one in the coming months.

Four – Infinix Hot Note X551

Infinix hote note

The Infinix Hot Note X551 is yet another discounted smartphone which offers high performance at a pocket-friendly price. This is essentially an improvement of the Infinix Hot X507, bringing on board a HD display, more processing power and twice the battery capacity. The phone is available in a range of trendy colors for uniqueness and Inside the 8.9 mm frame, Infinix has fitted a 4,000mAh lithium polymer battery. The Infinix Hot Note X551 is also quite powerful hence it has a Mediatek MT6592 octa-core CPU and Mali-450 graphics processor. If you have Kshs 9,999 you can go home with an Infinix Hot Note X551. Infinix X507 and Infinix Hote Note X551 are the phones that have placed Infinix in the radar and as such has become the device manufacturer all of us need to pay a closer attention to. See why in the article Infinix is changing the definition of budget phones with Infinix Hot Note x551.

Three – Microsoft Lumia 535

Lumia 535

In the third place is Microsoft Lumia 535, the phone that is priced just at the boundary of low budget and mid range smartphones, but with a mix of both high end and mid range features. This is one of the best phones Microsoft has ever produced. It comes with 5 MP cameras (front and rear) optimized for group selfies and Skype. The camera is paired with Lumia Selfie app with enhancements to spice up your casual and more professional selfies. With a 5-inch IPS display and smooth edges, this smartphone shares a little bit of design language with the Lumia 830. The device also features high speed 3G. Microsoft Windows Phone 8.1 with denim update powers the Lumia 535. You therefore get to share some of the best features with flagships such as the Lumia 930 and 830. The price is favorable for the common citizen because it goes for about Sh. 14,999. The release of Microsoft Lumia 640 and 640 XL, the coming of Lumia 840 and 940, and even the unveiling of the affordable Lumia 430 and 435 models means we should expect the popularity of this neat device to drop as go into the third and final quarter of 2015.

Two – Samsung Galaxy J1.

Galaxy J1

This phone is trending everywhere thanks to Samsung’s aggressive marketing – you see them in every advertisement. This is currently the cheapest smartphone that you can purchase from the manufacturer capable of providing access to 4G internet speeds. The phone has a perfect size that can be handled easily. It has a height of only 5.08 inches. As a result, the display is even smaller with a diagonal measurement of 4.3 inches. It uses a WVGA TFT capacitive touchscreen with a low resolution of 480p but since the pixels are packed close together at 217 pixels per inch, the image reproduction is decent enough. I have used the phone and it has a perfect performance, the hardware part of this smartphone will enable you to smoothly run social media apps, browsers, multimedia files and light gaming. This is owing to a modest 1.2 GHz quad- core processor that is complemented by 768 MB of RAM. The phone goes for Shs 9,999 from Jumia Kenya.

The phone however is not liked for its low RAM of 512 MB. Samsung Galaxy J2 is almost out and one of the improvements will be the inclusion of a 1 GB RAM specifically meant to tackle the lags caused by the small RAM in the Galaxy J1. We expect this phone to start dropping in the ranking as new and better devices enter the Kenyan market.

One – Samsung Galaxy S6

Galaxy S6

Many people believe that Samsung Galaxy S6 is better than iPhone 6 which is true. Today, there is no phone that is as premium feature packed and classy as the Samsung Galaxy S6 – sorry there is, it is the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. The problem is that Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge wasn’t the flagship device hence Samsung only released a limited edition and thus could not make it to our top ten smartphones in Kenya list. Samsung Galaxy S6 thefore stole the show and has managed to take the position one place despite the high launch price of Kshs 75K. Utilizing a QHD Super AMOLED display, Android OS version 5.0.2 Lollipop, an Exynos 7420 chip supporting two quad- core processors with 2.1 GHz and 1.5 GHz speeds and internal memory options of 32, 64 and 128GB, Samsung Galaxy S6 basically is all anyone could dream of in a smartphone by today’s standards. If you are a photographer this is an ideal phone for you because it has two cameras which are 16 megapixel and 5 megapixel shooters respectively with fast responses, wide angle lenses and image stabilization.

Watch out for a new list of top 10 smartphones in Kenya at the beginning of October that will cover your smartphone preferences between now and then.
