Nokia E6 Review- Smart Business Phone

The E6-00 is a high end smartphone, from the Nokia family of smartphones.

Design:

The phone has a solid-build with a metallic bezel on the edge of the phone. Has a good feel when held and isn’t too heavy. Features a full physical qwerty keypad including shortcut keys and a 2.46 inch capacitative touch screen (resolution: VGA 640 x 480). Having both the touchscreen and physical keypad was a first for me but impressive to use and would be a good option for those not yet totally sold on the touchscreen only type phones.

On the right side of the phone are the volume keys and voice command launch key. The micro-USB port for connecting to a computer is on the left side of the phone. The top of the phone has the microSD slot for additional memory, a 3.5mm earphone jack and the power button. On the other end of the phone is the phone charger connector and this it uses Nokia’s 2mm charging connector alias ‘small pin’ charger.

Accessing the back to insert the SIM card reveals its powerful 1500mAh battery. The SIM card slot is easily accessible and shouldn’t give anybody problems installing.

Power Up, Home Screen, Menus, the Phone:

On power up and after Nokia’s splash screen message, for initial set up one is prompted to set up an Ovi account that enables one to access the Ovi Store. Past that the home screen comes up which features 5 customizable home screen including widgets, themes and shortcuts. Scrolling to the different screens is easy with the touchscreen and the feedback good. I was pretty sold on the touchscreen from that point, quite a good feature.

The handset operates Nokia’s own operating System, Symbian Anna. Although Nokia seem to be moving away from building their own OS, Anna is quite a good system.

Onto the features….. Selecting the menu option from the homescreen loads the main menu which is familiar and easy to navigate. Each selection opens up to more menus, using a building blocks approach. Might take some getting used to in remembering where every menu/program is but should get much easier once accustomed to the phone.

Looking at a few of the menu items:

  • Messaging: Nicely laid out. Using the qwerty pad to type messages makes it easy and fast to type.
  • Web: The phone comes with its own browser but with the Ovi Store you can access other browsers to your liking. Internet speed is pretty good, running on 3.5G. Although I had some initial issues setting up internet settings as some network providers didn’t support automatic installation on this model. Hopefully though this will change with time. Lesson learnt: manually installing the settings really should be left to the experts, can be quite a challenge!!! The handset also features WiFi with good speeds providing you with an alternative means to connect to the internet.
  • Music: The music menu loads the music player and radio menus. Also provides an option to access the Ovi Music store. The Music player displays your music in a cover flow view. Scrolling is quite easy with the touchscreen and you will soon be bopping your head/singing along to your favourites. The handset also features an integrated speaker and music playback through the speaker is good. Most music formats are supported in this handset.
  • Applications: Place to find all applications and programs including the camera. Installed applications are also found in this menu.

Camera:

The handset features an amazing 8MP camera. Enough said. Perfect in every way. The handset also supports video recording in HD quality with a 720p resolution. Reviewing your photos and videos is through the Photos menu found in the main menu. Easy to use and features pinch to zoom in or zoom out. It also includes one-touch buttons for uploading your photos onto social networks. Also features a dual LED flash for those low-light photos.

Other features of the handset worth mentioning include:

  • Comes with on-board memory of 8GB. Plenty of space for your pictures, music and applications. In need of more space? Easy! Just add on the microSD cards. The handset takes up to 32GB cards.
  • Access to a wide selection of apps from the Ovi Store

Drawback:

MY only drawback so far was the phone vibration function. It wasn’t strong enough to be felt while in the pocket resulting in a couple missed calls. Not sure if the vibration can be increased, still hunting for that menu option!

Overall the phone is a good phone with top notch hardware specs, plenty of features and easy to use. I enjoyed using it and would recommend it to any user.
